Software Engineer, Developer Productivity

About the role
We are hiring a Software Engineer to accelerate every other engineer at Chalk by building and owning our internal developer platform, spanning Bazel, CI, release automation, and local tooling.
Key responsibilities
- Own our Bazel build system, including toolchains, dependency management, and remote execution.
- Create a consistent experience for engineers to run and develop Chalk in containerized development environments.
- Establish test and benchmark patterns across the organization.
- Own CI health, focusing on speed and reliability.
- Drive down test flakiness.
- Make C++ and Rust builds and tests faster through toolchain work, caching, remote execution, and dependency hygiene.
Required profile
- 5+ years of professional experience as a Software Engineer, ideally in developer productivity.
- Strong C++ coding experience.
- Solid background in distributed systems.
- Hands‑on Bazel experience, including writing BUILD files, Starlark, and configuring toolchains.
- Ability to work autonomously and make pragmatic trade‑offs.
- Strong communication skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience (experience outweighs credential).
