Senior Engineering Manager, Backend – Content Foundations

About the role

Scribd, Inc. is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead the newly formed Content Foundations team, which owns the ingestion platform for billions of documents. This role sits at the intersection of large‑scale data infrastructure and applied AI, driving real‑time, AI‑native content processing for the company’s consumer and AI products.

Key responsibilities

• Define vision and strategy for a real‑time, AI‑native ingestion system and make architectural decisions for a high‑scale live platform.
• Build state‑of‑the‑art AI into the platform, partnering with ML teams to ensure every document is understood, trusted, and enriched at upload.
• Lead and grow a founding team of backend and AI data engineers, shaping culture, hiring, and technical standards.
• Run the team as a product, setting roadmap, priorities, and commitments that other content teams rely on.
• Champion security‑first design, ensuring safe processing of untrusted content at massive scale.

Required profile

• 8+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years leading backend, data‑infrastructure, or platform teams.
• Deep expertise in high‑throughput distributed systems, streaming/event‑driven architectures, and large‑scale data pipelines.
• Strong enthusiasm for applied AI in production, with experience integrating ML/LLM models into document processing.
• Security‑mindset with experience designing systems for safe handling of untrusted input.
