Research Counsel

About the role

Anthropic is seeking a Research Counsel to join its Research Legal team. You will guide legal matters across the entire lifecycle of cutting‑edge AI model development, from data acquisition to model launch and societal impact research. The role blends deep legal expertise with fast‑moving AI research to enable responsible innovation.

Key responsibilities

• Advise research and data teams on data sourcing, licensing, partnerships, and shape Anthropic’s data acquisition strategy as laws evolve.
• Coordinate regulatory readiness for model launches, review documentation, respond to inquiries, and counsel on pre‑release legal questions.
• Support Responsible Scaling Policy on biological and chemical risk, including capability evaluations and tiered access for biosecurity researchers.
• Counsel Societal Impacts, Alignment, Interpretability, Model Welfare, and Beneficial Deployments teams on research design, data collection, external collaborations, program launches, and publication review.
• Monitor global AI, privacy, copyright, and export‑control developments and translate them into internal guidance and policy.
• Engage with academics, regulators, industry groups, and civil society to develop norms and best practices for responsible AI development and data governance.

Required profile

• J.D. degree and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar (California or New York preferred).
• Proven ability to solve complex legal questions at the intersection of machine learning, data, and academic research.
• Creative problem‑solving skills to apply legal requirements to rapidly changing technical work while enabling responsible research.
• Experience navigating AI‑related regulations such as the EU AI Act, U.S. state laws, and emerging global rules.
