Research Associate – Genotyping

About the role
The Center for Aquaculture Technologies is seeking a Research Associate to support the development, optimisation and delivery of next‑generation sequencing services in its Genotyping laboratory in San Diego, CA. The role combines hands‑on laboratory work with assay design and automation to advance SNP panel creation for a range of aquaculture species.
Key responsibilities
- Design and validate SNP panels and associated assays using NGS platforms such as Thermo ION, Element Aviti and Oxford Nanopore.
- Perform NGS library preparation, quality control and high‑throughput DNA extractions.
- Troubleshoot protocols to improve data consistency, quality and throughput.
- Develop and implement liquid‑handling automation for DNA extraction and library preparation.
- Collaborate with scientists, technicians and research associates, and provide training and support to research technicians.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, manage inventories and coordinate vendor sourcing.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, life sciences or a related discipline.
- Experience with assay development and library preparation on Illumina or Thermo ION sequencing platforms.
- Familiarity with DNA extraction systems and liquid‑handling automation.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to follow protocols.
- Excellent written and verbal English communication.
- Ability to work both independently and within a team in a fast‑paced environment.

- Competitive salary ranging from $46,000 to $79,000 based on experience.

- Training schedule of 3‑4 months with full‑time hours (Monday‑Friday, 9:00‑17:30).
