Research Assistant – Radiation & Space Biology

About the role

The Department of Radiation Medicine at Georgetown University seeks a Research Assistant to support radiation‑related and space research projects. The role involves hands‑on molecular biology, biochemistry, and -omics experiments using both in‑vitro and in‑vivo models.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct radiation‑focused experiments with cell cultures and mouse models, including sample collection of biofluids and tissues.
• Process biological samples for large‑scale data acquisition.
• Perform molecular and biochemical assays such as DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, RT‑qPCR, protein isolation, ELISA, colorimetric and fluorescent assays, histology, and western blotting.
• Assist with basic bioinformatic analysis, data visualization, and preparation of figures for publications and presentations.
• Support laboratory operations: ordering supplies, equipment maintenance, and organization.
• Provide training and technical assistance to students and collaborate with core facility staff.
• Travel up to three weeks for studies at external institutions as required.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in biology, biochemistry, or a related field, or a Bachelor’s degree with substantial research experience.
• Demonstrated experience handling mice; familiarity with mouse surgical techniques is a plus.
• Strong organizational, record‑keeping, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently on multiple projects simultaneously.
