Publishing Director – Applied Sciences Journals

About the role

The Publishing Director role is a key strategic position within Springer Nature’s publishing programme, responsible for creating and executing plans to grow a global portfolio of applied‑sciences journals. This full‑time role is based in the New York or Philadelphia office and operates under a hybrid working model.

Key responsibilities

• Build and lead high‑performing teams, fostering an inclusive environment that drives strategic and operational success.
• Define and evolve portfolio strategy aligned with market opportunities and long‑term business objectives.
• Use data analytics to assess portfolio performance and translate insights into actionable plans.
• Identify, evaluate, and pursue partnerships with societies, editors, and journal owners to support growth.
• Manage complex stakeholder relationships, navigating competing priorities and fostering collaboration.
• Partner with editors, editorial boards, and the research community to strengthen Springer Nature’s reputation.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, preferably in a scientific, academic, or business field.
• Significant experience in scientific or scholarly publishing with leadership responsibility for people, portfolios, and business performance.
• Proven track record of shaping portfolio strategies that drive growth and market impact.
• Deep understanding of the research lifecycle and the evolving publishing ecosystem.
• Strong commercial acumen with ability to identify emerging opportunities and develop strategic partnerships.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills with fluency in written and spoken English.
