Pipe Layer – Wastewater Construction

About the role

The Pipe Layer works under the supervision of the Construction Crew Leader or Supervisor in the Wastewater Department. The role involves installing, repairing, and maintaining sanitary and storm water sewer structures and pipe systems.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and align sewer pipes, cut to length, and seal joints using welding equipment, cement or glue.
• Layout pipe routes, dig and grade trenches, install pipe using machinery and laser guidance, and backfill to specifications.
• Locate, repair or replace existing pipes using magnetic or radio indicators and install auxiliary lines.
• Operate and maintain air monitoring devices, pumps, compressors, and generators on site.
• Assist with underground service line repairs, manhole work, and pipe‑lining operations.
• Enter work order information on a mobile handheld device and use mapping systems for job completion.

Required profile

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Minimum 5 years construction experience, including at least 1 year in pipe laying.
• Ability to obtain a Class B CDL within six months.

Required skills

• Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
• Pipe laying and trenching techniques.
• Use of welding equipment, cement, and glue for pipe sealing.
• Operation of pipe‑laying machinery and laser guidance tools.
• Magnetic and radio pipe detection devices.
• Air monitoring, pump, compressor, and generator operation.
• Use of lasers, grade rods, and transit levels for alignment.
• Mobile handheld device for work order entry and mapping.
