Optical System Engineer – Semiconductor Industry

About the role

As an Optical System Engineer at Applied Materials, you will design, integrate, and optimize complex optical systems that enable next‑generation semiconductor and photonic chips. You will work closely with cross‑functional teams to develop advanced solutions, write system specifications, and ensure high‑quality performance for our customers.

Key responsibilities

• Utilize Zemax (geometric and physical optics) to perform optical simulations and design fiber‑coupling optics for photonic chips.
• Collaborate with suppliers to define specifications and optimize the performance of fiber‑coupling components.
• Design and execute experiments to evaluate individual optical components and overall fiber‑coupling performance.
• Provide technical support to mechanical and process engineers to ensure optimal performance under realistic manufacturing conditions.

Required profile

• Proficiency with Zemax optical design software, including statistical tolerancing analysis.
• Hands‑on experience in optical testing setup design, assembly, and alignment.
• Programming skills for instrument control and test automation.
• Data processing and analysis using Python, MATLAB, or similar high‑level languages.
• Nice‑to‑have experience with fiber‑coupling designs, optical communication standards (pluggable, NPO, CPO), and photonic integrated circuit (PIC) design.
