Mechanical Engineer

About the role

Join the nation’s only repository for transuranic nuclear waste as a Mechanical Engineer supporting the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in Carlsbad, NM. You will ensure the operability and reliability of mine hoists that transport waste, personnel, and material.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain technical operability of mine hoists and associated systems.
• Coordinate with multiple WIPP departments to ensure equipment safety and reliability.
• Set goals, develop schedules, and meet commitments for hoisting operations.
• Identify and implement continuous‑improvement initiatives.
• Communicate effectively with management on issues, potential risks, and resolutions.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
• Minimum two (2) years of relevant experience.
• Industrial controls experience (relay control and PLC).
• Experience with motor drives and/or hydraulic systems.
• Willingness to work in a field environment supporting maintenance and operations.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering prints.
• Must be at least 18 years old and authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.
• Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for site access.
