Engineering Manager, Search

About the role

Anthropic is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead its Search Platform team in San Francisco. The team builds and operates the search stack that powers Claude’s web‑search capabilities across the product, API and agentic interfaces. The role blends technical leadership with product ownership, ensuring high‑quality retrieval, relevance and scalable serving.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, mentor and grow a team of engineers responsible for indexing, retrieval, ranking and serving.
• Define and execute the platform strategy and roadmap to meet Claude’s evolving search needs.
• Own search quality through evaluation methodology, relevance measurement and regression detection.
• Operate the platform at production scale, balancing user traffic, research and training workloads while maintaining reliability, latency and cost targets.
• Collaborate with product, research and infrastructure partners, representing search in product discussions and prioritising feature launches.
• Participate hands‑on in design reviews, incident follow‑ups and deep‑dives into relevance changes.
• Recruit, hire and retain top engineering talent.

Required profile

• Significant experience managing engineering teams, including hiring and scaling through rapid change.
• Proven track record building or operating large‑scale search systems (indexing, retrieval, ranking or query serving).
• Technical depth to contribute hands‑on: review designs, read code and engage with senior individual contributors.
• Product mindset with the ability to shape search experience and make trade‑off decisions.
