Controls Engineer – Battery Management Systems

About the role

ALSO is seeking a Controls Engineer to lead the development of battery management system (BMS) algorithms for its next‑generation electric vehicles. You will work closely with cross‑functional teams to create robust, safety‑critical control solutions that enable efficient charging, thermal management, and power distribution.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement control algorithms for BMS, covering thermal management, charging, and power distribution.
• Develop and validate physics‑based or data‑driven state‑of‑charge (SOC), state‑of‑health (SOH), and state‑of‑function (SOF) estimation methods.
• Create protection strategies such as over‑voltage/under‑voltage, over‑current, cell balancing, and thermal limits.
• Build system models in MATLAB/Simulink/Stateflow and generate production‑grade embedded code for microcontrollers.
• Support model‑based development workflows, including MIL, SIL, and HIL testing.
• Integrate BMS algorithms into vehicle architecture while ensuring compliance with safety standards.
• Analyze field data to improve predictive models for battery degradation.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Computer, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Strong understanding of lithium‑ion battery systems, SOC/SOH estimation, and cell‑balancing techniques.
• Familiarity with high‑voltage sensing, BMS architecture, and functional safety standards (e.g., ISO 26262).
