Campus Custodian – Facilities Services

About the role

The Custodian will maintain cleanliness and safety across assigned buildings on the Carleton College Campus. This full‑time, non‑exempt position supports the campus community by performing cleaning, disinfecting, and basic maintenance tasks.

Key responsibilities

• Lock and unlock interior and exterior doors as directed.
• Vacuum, spot‑clean carpets and fabric furniture.
• Report repair or replacement needs via work orders and close them within eight days.
• Guide and assist in training student employees.
• Maintain inventory and order supplies.
• Handle cleaning chemicals safely, label them correctly, and follow environmental health guidelines.
• Ensure safety, proper storage, and use of equipment and personal protective gear.
• Remove trash and recycling, dust, wash windows, replace light bulbs, and clean fixtures.
• Clean writing boards, maintain chalk and erasers.
• Service lavatories, locker rooms, showers, lounges, and kitchenettes.
• Maintain hard‑floor surfaces and perform floor renewal as needed.
• Perform laundry duties and manage linens and roll‑away beds.
• Assist with snow removal, shoveling, and outdoor area upkeep.
• Move supplies, equipment, and furniture and set rooms according to work sheets.
• Conduct pest‑control tasks.
• Cover duties of absent custodial staff when required.
• Perform any other tasks assigned by the supervisor.

Required profile

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Neat appearance and adherence to departmental cleanliness standards.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Strong communication skills for interacting with a diverse campus community.

Required skills

• Basic computer proficiency (email and calendar use).
• Knowledge of cleaning chemicals, proper labeling, and safety procedures.
• Pest‑control techniques.

What we offer

• Hourly wage of $27.18.
• One‑year training period with a $2.00/hour reduction at start.
• $1.00/hour increase after six months and another after twelve months.
