Associate General Counsel

About the role

Canals is seeking its first Associate General Counsel to lead the commercial contracts function and serve as the General Counsel’s principal legal partner. You will work across all business verticals, translating legal risk and opportunity into clear, actionable guidance while helping the company scale rapidly.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, negotiate, and close enterprise SaaS/AI agreements, including relevant addenda and schedules such as DPAs.
• Build and maintain contract templates and a negotiation playbook that empowers the sales team to move deals faster.
• Manage inbound redlines, establish contract review SLAs, and own day‑to‑day privacy compliance and data‑governance strategy.
• Serve as the embedded legal partner for Sales & Marketing, Product, Engineering, and Finance.
• Identify legal risks early in product development and advise on mitigation without slowing velocity.
• Develop legal‑ops infrastructure, including contract management tooling and intake processes.

Required profile

• J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing.
• 4‑8 years of experience, including at least 2‑3 years at an Am Law 100 firm in transactional/commercial practice.
• Deep expertise in commercial contract drafting and negotiation of complex deals.
• Proven ability to work independently, prioritize competing demands, and make judgment calls without hand‑holding.
• Clear, direct communicator who writes and speaks in plain language.
