Associate Director, Doctoral Career Services

About the role

The Associate Director, Doctoral Career Services leads career education and advising for doctoral students, post‑docs and alumni at the University of Miami. The role designs and delivers programs that help PhD trainees explore industry, government, nonprofit and entrepreneurial pathways.

Key responsibilities

• Provide one‑on‑one and group career coaching, covering academic and non‑academic job searches, research‑to‑industry transitions and professional identity development.
• Create and disseminate written, video and digital content tailored to doctoral‑level career readiness, and curate resources on academic and non‑academic pathways.
• Plan, implement and assess doctoral‑focused events aligned with key milestones such as candidacy, completion and post‑PhD transitions.
• Design and deliver workshops and short courses on professional skill development, research communication and job‑search strategies.
• Maintain relationships with PhD alumni and employers, supporting mentoring, recruiting and experiential learning opportunities.
• Develop assessment strategies, analyze engagement data and prepare reports to drive continuous improvement.

Required profile

• Master’s degree required; minimum four years of relevant advising or professional‑development experience.
• Preferred experience working with graduate or doctoral students, post‑docs or early‑career researchers.
• Knowledge of doctoral career pathways across academia, industry, government and research‑intensive roles.
• Commitment to supporting diverse doctoral populations and ability to stay current on labor‑market trends.

Required skills

• Advanced communication and advising abilities for diverse audiences.
• Experience designing and facilitating workshops for small to large groups.
• Strong relationship‑building skills with faculty, alumni, employers and campus partners.
• Proficiency with career‑services platforms such as Handshake, Big Interview, uConnect and Interstride.
