Tank Fitter Helper

About the role

The Tank Fitter Helper supports the construction, assembly, and repair of metal storage tanks, boilers, pressure vessels and related piping. Working from blueprints and specifications, the role involves using hand and power tools, torches and rigging equipment to fit and finish tank components on site.

Key responsibilities

• Construct and erect metal tanks for storage of gases, liquids or other materials according to specifications.
• Assemble, analyze defects in, and repair boilers, pressure vessels, tanks, vats and related piping in the field.
• Read, study and interpret job specifications, plans and blueprints; perform calculations using geometry and trigonometry.
• Operate burning torches (hand and magnetic), perform limited grinding, and layout/fit bottoms, shell plates, nozzles, roof plates and inserts.
• Use key plates and fit‑up equipment to control banding and peaking in horizontal and vertical seams.
• Operate man lifts, erect tank scaffolding, and use air and electric power tools for tank repair.
• Apply proper rigging techniques and work under breathing‑air conditions.
• Review permits, MSDS sheets and warning signs in the work area.

Required profile

• Minimum four years’ experience in tank fitting, rigging and flagging.
• Successful completion of the company’s in‑house Tank Fitter Assessment Test.
• High school diploma or GED preferred; trade school program preferred but not required.

Required skills

• Burning torch operation (hand and magnetic).
• Grinding and basic metal finishing.
• Layout and fitting of tank components (bottoms, shells, nozzles, roofs, inserts).
• Use of key plates and fit‑up equipment.
• Man lift operation.
• Erection of tank scaffolding.
• Operation of air and electric power tools.
• Rigging techniques and crane flagging hand signals.
• Work under breathing‑air conditions.
• Interpretation of blueprints and basic geometry/trigonometry calculations.
• Review of permits, MSDS and safety signage.
