Job description

About the role

Amentum is seeking a Structural Dynamics Engineer to support current and future development programs for government (NASA) and commercial companies, including the Space Launch System (SLS) and Human Lander System (HLS) programs. The position is currently on-site at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, and may later move to the Amentum facility in Huntsville or a customer site.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop structural dynamic models and simulations for launch vehicles and spacecraft across multiple configurations and loading events, including liftoff, ascent, lunar landing and moonquakes
  • Produce and maintain structural models from FEMAP, NASTRAN or in-house codes for low-frequency couple loads, high-frequency vibration, shock and acoustic analysis, correlating them with test data when available
  • Perform Hurty/Craig-Bampton model reductions and develop environments and forcing functions for multiple loading events
  • Run in-house and commercial simulations (e.g., LS-Dyna, Adams) and predict payload loads and define environment levels for analysis and testing
  • Process ground and flight test data, prepare test plans, monitor tests and analyze results in post-test reports
  • Take part in customer/provider and technical interface meetings, reviews and presentations, and publish detailed analysis and test reports

Required profile

  • US citizen with a STAR ID; acceptable background to access a US government facility
  • BS degree (MS preferred) in Mechanical, Aerospace, Civil, Structures or Engineering Mechanics, preferably from an ABET-accredited institution; typically equivalent to a Master's with at least 8 years of experience, or a BS with at least 10 years
  • Resident of the greater Huntsville area or willing to relocate; up to 5% travel
  • Ability to learn complex methods and tools quickly, work independently and communicate clearly with team members, providers and customers

Required skills

  • NASTRAN, Hurty/Craig-Bampton model reduction, steady-state and transient dynamic analysis (a plus)
  • LS-Dyna, ADAMS multibody dynamics or similar tools highly desirable
  • Matlab, C, Python or other programming languages highly desirable
  • FEMAP or other finite element modeling interfaces, familiarity with NASA and commercial spaceflight programs

What we offer

  • Professional and leadership development, education reimbursement, mentoring and company-sponsored networking
  • Wellness programs, paid holidays, paid time off and flexible schedules
  • Normal hours 7:30-4:30, Monday to Friday, with occasional overtime
