Materials Engineer, Battery Metals & Materials

About the role

Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Materials Engineer to accelerate the transition to renewable energy through innovative battery metals and materials solutions. You will work across the full value chain—from mining to active battery materials to recycling—addressing some of the most challenging engineering problems of our time.

Key responsibilities

• Serve as the primary technical resource for multiple battery‑related technologies in both laboratory and pilot settings.
• Design, execute, and analyze experiments; plan campaign schedules and report findings.
• Translate material and process insights into actionable guidance, design criteria, or tangible material improvements.
• Maintain safe, organized, and efficient day‑to‑day operations, including production planning and data collection.
• Collaborate with large, cross‑functional teams and communicate R&D results to all organizational levels.

Required profile

• Degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum two years of industrial experience with quantifiable lab or pilot results.
• Proven track record of overcoming significant R&D challenges (e.g., startup success, primary‑author publications, patents, or commercialized technology).
• Strong attention to detail with excellent record‑keeping and organizational abilities.
