The Climate Desk at The New York Times seeks a high‑energy journalist to cover climate and environmental policy and politics. Based in Washington, D.C., you will help readers understand shifting regulations, key influencers, and the broader impact of government actions.

Key responsibilities

• Break news on climate and environmental policy, focusing on the EPA, Interior, Energy departments, and Congress.
• Pitch, report, and write news and enterprise stories that reveal surprising angles.
• Think visually to present stories in compelling formats.
• Contribute to live coverage of breaking news.
• Explain the impact of regulations and political forces for a broad audience.
• Collaborate with reporters and multidisciplinary teams.
• Deliver fast, accurate copy on complex topics while meeting tight deadlines.

Required profile

• 5+ years of experience at a daily news organization.
• 3+ years of demonstrated beat authority on climate or environmental policy.
• Proven track record of scoops and reporting that shapes national conversation.
• Portfolio showing creativity, deep sourcing, curiosity, and ability to simplify complex ideas.
• Strong commitment to journalistic independence and the mission to seek truth.
