Utility Design Engineer – Minneapolis (Remote)

About the role

HBK Engineering is seeking an experienced Designer to lead the engineering design of overhead and subsurface utility projects for clients in the Minneapolis area. This remote position offers a high degree of independence, allowing you to apply your expertise in electrical, structural, and civil engineering while mentoring junior staff.

Key responsibilities

• Develop complete design packages that meet specifications, codes, and client requirements for utility infrastructure.
• Apply Xcel Energy Distribution Design and Engineering standards to ensure compliance and project success.
• Prepare detailed construction documents using AutoCAD and client‑specific asset management platforms.
• Analyze topographical surveys, utility atlases, field sketches, and manufacturer datasheets.
• Create utility pole loading models with structural software such as SPIDAcalc.
• Conduct field walk‑downs and communicate engineering findings to project managers, leadership, and field crews.
• Coach and review work of entry‑level designers, providing peer feedback and mentorship.

Required profile

• Proven experience designing utility systems with minimal supervision.
• Strong understanding of electrical, structural, and civil engineering principles.
• Ability to interpret and apply industry standards and codes.
• Excellent communication skills for presenting technical information.
