Research Engineer – Level II to IV

About the role

The Research Engineer will support the ALIAS Texas project, a DARPA‑selected initiative that brings advanced autonomous capabilities to wildland firefighting. Working in the Systems Integration Lab, you will help build and sustain a comprehensive simulation environment that underpins the project’s technology development.

Key responsibilities

• Implement, maintain, and operate the integrated simulation platform (physics, visual, aircraft, communications, and fire models).
• Develop new simulation components and improve existing ones to reflect real‑world operational scenarios.
• Collaborate closely with autonomous‑systems researchers, frontline firefighters, and emergency responders.
• Provide technical support for simulation runs, data analysis, and system troubleshooting.
• Document system architecture, procedures, and performance metrics.

Required profile

• Strong analytical mindset with a passion for applying simulation technology to life‑saving challenges.
• Ability to work in a dynamic research‑development environment and bridge technology with operational needs.
• Excellent communication skills for interdisciplinary collaboration.

Required skills

• Experience with physics‑based simulation engines.
• Familiarity with visual rendering engines.
• Knowledge of aircraft and communications simulation.
• Understanding of fire behavior modeling.
