Director, Research Engineering & Operations

About the role

The Center for Applied Communications and Networks (CACN) within the Texas A&M University System Offices seeks a senior leader to direct research engineering and operations. Reporting to the Executive Director, the incumbent will guide both strategic and day‑to‑day activities, ensuring the Center delivers cutting‑edge network solutions for public safety, critical infrastructure, and national defense.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the Center’s operational and engineering functions, acting as the Executive Director’s proxy when needed.
• Develop and execute strategic plans, budgets, and resource allocations for research initiatives.
• Oversee basic and applied research, development, testing, and evaluation of wireless and wired communication systems.
• Serve as Principal Investigator, Co‑PI, or subject‑matter expert on research projects and commercial contracts.
• Represent the Center in internal and external stakeholder engagements.

Required profile

• Proven senior‑level leadership in research engineering or network systems.
• Experience managing large‑scale research programs in public safety, critical infrastructure, or defense sectors.
• Ability to make high‑impact technical and operational decisions.
• Strong track record of securing and managing research funding.
