Tax Auditor (Criminal Investigations) – NY State

About the role

The New York State Criminal Investigations Division is seeking qualified individuals to conduct tax audits and examinations, ensuring compliance with NYS Tax Law and related statutes. The role involves extensive field work, case preparation for prosecution, and representation of the Division in various legal settings.

Key responsibilities

• Audit taxpayer books and records to verify compliance with NYS Tax Law.
• Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of Tax Law, Criminal Tax, Penal Law, and CID policies.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors, taxpayers, representatives, and prosecuting offices.
• Travel frequently, including overnight trips and field work outside regular business hours.
• Prepare and present cases for prosecution, testify in grand juries, trials, and hearings.
• Conduct interviews of witnesses, taxpayers, and subjects under investigation.
• Perform special assignments and adhere to departmental time‑and‑attendance rules.

Required profile

• Eligibility for appointment under Civil Service Law and related regulations.
• Ability to travel extensively and work flexible hours.
• Willingness to serve a two‑year traineeship or permanent appointment as needed.
• Compliance with NY HELPS hiring procedures and related eligibility lists.

Required skills

• Proficiency in operating laptop computers, PCs, and standard office software.
