Boatswain – Deck Maintenance Supervisor

About the role

The Boatswain supports the training ship’s maintenance program, working under the Chief Mate and supervising Deck Cadets. This role combines hands‑on deck work, safety compliance, and mentorship on a USCG‑licensed training vessel.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Chief Mate with MARAD and US Coast Guard safety inspections.
• Supervise and mentor Deck Cadets in deck maintenance, sanitation, and equipment upkeep.
• Implement and document the vessel’s preventive maintenance schedule.
• Perform troubleshooting, repairs, and routine maintenance on deck machinery and equipment.
• Support mooring, cargo handling, longshore supervision, and coating preservation.
• Conduct safety training, job safety analyses, and ensure compliance with USCG regulations.
• Maintain maintenance databases and scheduling systems.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required profile

• High School diploma or GED.
• Minimum five years of maritime experience aboard a seafaring vessel.
• State‑issued Class “C” driver’s license (or ability to obtain within 30 days).
• Valid passport, TWIC card, and Merchant Mariner Credential (or ability to obtain within 90 days).
• USCG MMC endorsement as Able Seaman Special or higher (preferred).
