Assistant Professor of Art History – Global Early Modern Art

About the role

The Department of Art History at SUNY New Paltz seeks a tenure‑track Assistant Professor to join its faculty in August 2026. The position focuses on Global Early Modern Art (1400–1800), emphasizing the visual and material culture of Africa or the Americas.

Key responsibilities

• Teach three courses per semester, including a world‑art survey and specialized seminars in the candidate’s area of expertise.
• Maintain an active research agenda demonstrated by publications, conference presentations, and ongoing projects.
• Provide academic advising and mentorship to a diverse undergraduate student body.
• Participate in departmental and university committees, contributing to curriculum development and service initiatives.
• Foster interdisciplinary connections with programs such as Black Studies and Latin American & Caribbean Studies.

Required profile

• Specialization in the visual or material culture of Africa or the Americas during the Early Modern period.
• Scholarly interest in the global Renaissance or transcultural approaches to Early Modern art history.
• Demonstrated ability to teach both introductory and advanced art‑history courses.
• Commitment to inclusive teaching practices and mentorship of students from diverse backgrounds.
