Student Support Specialist

About the role

The Student Support Specialist works directly with refugee students, their families, case staff and the Abilene Independent School District to facilitate academic and civic integration. The role focuses on removing barriers to education and promoting successful outcomes for newly arrived students in Abilene.

Key responsibilities

• Assess the educational background of refugee students and identify barriers to success.
• Develop individualized educational service plans and academic support plans with parents.
• Orient students and parents to the U.S. education system and AISD regulations.
• Connect students with tutoring resources and refer them to IRC or external services for medical and social support.
• Train, supervise, and support volunteer mentors delivering academic coaching.
• Plan and facilitate group‑based programming, including Spring Break and Summer Academy activities.
• Maintain safeguarding, safety and security compliance.
• Monitor attendance, communicate regularly with caregivers, and provide cultural training to educational partners.
• Document program information, manage student files, and enter data into ETO in line with contractual obligations.
• Contribute to internal and external program reporting.

Required profile

• Experience working with refugee or immigrant students and families.
• Ability to coordinate with school districts, case staff and external partners.
• Strong communication skills for regular interaction with parents and caregivers.
• Commitment to safeguarding, safety and security policies.

Required skills

• Proficiency with ETO data entry system.
