Optical Research Engineer

About the role

3M is seeking an Optical Research Engineer to join its global team of optical scientists. In this role you will contribute to the development of fiber‑optic interconnect products, working on innovative projects that support the company’s Interconnect Portfolio.

Key responsibilities

• Support fiber‑optic interconnect product development as part of an optical science team.
• Lead a small group of technicians, providing supervision, training and guidance for test execution.
• Develop and execute test plans, prepare samples, conduct tests, analyse data and produce detailed test reports.
• Generate intellectual property, analyse competitor technologies and define IP strategies.
• Collaborate with manufacturing teams to improve production processes and support existing platforms.
• Manage laboratory facilities, including equipment maintenance, upgrades and procurement of new test tools.
• Interface with global teams to contribute to new product development and ensure technical claims are supported by data.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in optical science, engineering, mechanical or electrical engineering (or related field).
• At least three years of optical design experience in a private, public, government or military setting.
• Additional experience in fiber‑optic communications systems and data‑center networking is a plus.
• Demonstrated ability to work with laboratory test equipment and to lead small technical teams.
