Local Hazard Mitigation Planner – South Carolina

About the role
Serve as the primary liaison and subject‑matter expert for local hazard mitigation planning across South Carolina. You will work directly with local governments to develop, update, and maintain hazard mitigation plans that meet federal and state requirements, supporting resilient community development.
Key responsibilities
- Guide local governments through the five‑year mitigation planning cycle, ensuring plans remain current and aligned with evolving goals and program guidance.
- Review and provide feedback on local hazard mitigation plans for compliance with federal requirements and state expectations.
- Contribute to the update and maintenance of the State Hazard Mitigation Plan (SHMP) and support federal mitigation grant programs.
- Review mitigation grant applications for planning compliance as needed.
- Coordinate with other state agencies to align statewide hazard reduction goals.
- Develop and maintain mitigation planning reporting products.
- Attend meetings to advocate for community risk reduction and educate stakeholders.
- Occasionally travel overnight and work irregular hours during emergencies.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Minimum two years of experience in emergency planning, operational response, or multi‑agency coordination.
- Ability to obtain a South Carolina driver’s license.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Preferred: S.C. or IAEM Certified Emergency Manager certification (or willingness to obtain within three years).
