Lieutenant – Correctional Security Supervisor

About the role

The Lieutenant position is a senior supervisory role within a state adult correctional facility, responsible for overseeing security operations on an assigned shift or unit. The incumbent leads a team of first‑level supervisors and security staff, ensuring safe and orderly facility operations.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate and supervise correctional security functions, acting as shift supervisor or chief of security.
• Lead the correctional emergency response team, schedule training exercises, and manage emergency incidents.
• Conduct special investigations of incidents occurring during assigned shifts.
• Oversee security, riot, and escape procedures, including inmate counts and contraband searches.
• Prepare daily work schedules, maintain personnel records, and produce administrative reports.
• Inspect staff attire and fitness for duty, and ensure proper maintenance of security posts.
• Serve as liaison to local law‑enforcement agencies and arrange court appearances.
• Participate in institutional policy development and rule formulation.

Required profile

• Knowledge of supervisory methods, staffing patterns, and work‑assignment scheduling.
• Understanding of correctional security operations, discipline procedures, and emergency response protocols.
• Experience conducting investigations and preparing detailed reports.
• Ability to coordinate with external law‑enforcement agencies and manage court liaison duties.
