About the role

The Humanitarian Affairs Officer will support OCHA’s mission to coordinate effective humanitarian action in emergencies. Based in New York, the officer works within the Strategic Analysis and Innovation Unit, contributing to policy development, field coordination and inter‑agency collaboration.

Key responsibilities

  • Monitor, analyse and report on humanitarian developments and disaster situations in assigned areas.
  • Organise and prepare studies on emergency relief, facilitate inter‑agency technical review meetings and draft policy positions on humanitarian law and human rights.
  • Participate in complex disaster assessments, coordinate international assistance, and produce situation reports for the global community.
  • Partner with UN agencies, NGOs and other stakeholders to plan, evaluate and improve humanitarian programmes, ensuring gender considerations are integrated.
  • Assist in the preparation of appeals for international assistance and oversee the proper use of donor contributions channeled through OCHA.
  • Establish and maintain contacts with government officials, diplomatic missions, media and other relevant actors.
  • Provide technical support for field missions, including on‑site reviews of country coordination mechanisms.

Required profile

  • Demonstrated experience in humanitarian emergency response and coordination.
  • Knowledge of international humanitarian law, human rights law and gender‑related considerations.
  • Strong analytical abilities and experience preparing policy briefs, situation reports and appeals.
  • Proven ability to work with diverse UN agencies, NGOs, governments and donor communities.
