HUD Certified Housing Counselor

About the role

The Chicago Urban League’s Housing Department is seeking a HUD Certified Housing Counselor to provide comprehensive counseling on homeownership, rental, and foreclosure prevention. This position blends financial coaching with client education, helping individuals achieve sustainable housing and financial stability.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver one‑on‑one and group counseling covering pre‑purchase requirements, foreclosure prevention, and rental options.
• Maintain accurate client files and program records in compliance with contractual and grant requirements.
• Manage data integrity in the Counselor Max database and other client management systems.
• Participate in housing fairs, seminars, and workshops, both virtual and in‑person.
• Prepare timely reports for audits, contract reviews, and funder requirements.
• Complete 30 hours of continuing education every three years to retain certification.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or 2‑4 years of relevant experience.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate financial concepts in a non‑judgmental manner.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage time effectively.
• Willingness to work from both home and office environments.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
• Experience with database software, specifically Counselor Max and other CMS platforms.
• Ability to analyze credit reports and provide financial coaching.
