Emergency Planning GIS Coordinator – Hazard Mitigation

About the role

The position serves as a liaison, guide, and technical expert for developing GIS products that support hazard mitigation planning. It assists state and local agencies in creating hazard mitigation plans that meet federal requirements and helps maintain the MitigationSC online platform.

Key responsibilities

• Design, edit, and maintain GIS data for hazard identification, risk analysis, and mitigation planning products.
• Develop data visualisation products and ensure data integrity and accuracy.
• Provide training and technical support on GIS tools to internal and external stakeholders.
• Assist with updates to the State Hazard Mitigation Plan and support federal mitigation grant programs.
• Attend meetings to advocate for community risk reduction and coordinate with other state agencies.
• Support the Plans and Recovery sections during State Emergency Operations Center activations, including occasional overnight travel.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in emergency planning, geography, public health management, or a related field.
• Experience with GIS development and maintenance, or related technical experience.
• Highly proficient in Microsoft Office.
• Ability to prepare analytical maps, tables, reports, and oral presentations.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Valid South Carolina driver’s license.
