CFO / Controller – Construction Finance Leader

About the role

We are seeking a senior finance leader to serve as CFO/Controller for a Manhattan‑based family‑owned general contractor specializing in affordable and mixed‑income housing. The role combines full‑cycle finance oversight with strategic partnership to ownership and project teams.

Key responsibilities

• Lead month/quarter/year‑end close, prepare internal and external financial statements, and manage regulatory reporting.
• Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and ad‑hoc analysis to support strategic decisions.
• Supervise day‑to‑day accounting functions including AR, AP, payroll, job costing, and credit/collections.
• Coordinate project finance with operations: set‑up, work‑in‑progress (WIP), cost reporting, and ongoing projections.
• Manage all audit cycles (financial, corporate, insurance, CCIP, 401(k), sales tax) and tax filings.
• Partner with the Risk Director on CCIP reporting and audits.
• Lead external advisors such as audit firms and tax consultants.
• Drive continuous improvement of financial systems, controls, and processes alongside the executive team.
• Recruit, develop, and manage the accounting team.

Required profile

• 15+ years of construction accounting experience, including time in a Controller role.
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance; CPA preferred, MBA/MS a plus.
• Deep knowledge of general contractor finance mechanics (job costing, WIP, percentage‑of‑completion, CCIP/OCIP).
• Proven ability to build and tighten controls in a growing organization.
• Strong leadership and communication skills.
